In The Prevention of Literature, Orwell writes, “But what is sinister, as I said at the beginning of this essay, is that the conscious enemies of liberty are those to whom liberty ought to mean most … the direct, conscious attack on intellectual decency comes from the intellectuals themselves.” And “The desire for liberty among the intellectuals themselves is the most serious symptom of all." He states of the left that,” known facts are suppressed and distorted,” and in a line that is comparable to today’s media bias, Orwell writes, “if you possess information that conflicts with the prevailing orthodoxy you are expected to either distort it or keep quiet about it.”

In Reflections on Ghandi, he discusses the hypocrisy of pacifists, “Nor did he, like most Western pacifists, specialize in avoiding awkward questions. In relation to the late war (World War 2), one question that every pacifist had a clear obligation to answer was: 'What about the Jews? Are you prepared to see them exterminated? If not, how do you propose to save them without resorting to war?' I must say that I have never heard, from any Western pacifist, an honest answer to this question, though I have heard plenty of evasions.”

Lear, Tolstoy and the Fool explores the totalitarian nature of leftist politics, “but they will, if they can, get inside his brain and dictate his thoughts for him in the minutest particulars. Creeds like pacifism and anarchism, which seem on the surface to imply a complete renunciation of power, rather encourage this habit of mind. For if you have embraced a creed which appears to be free from the ordinary dirtiness of politics – a creed from which you yourself cannot expect to draw any material advantage – surely that proves that you are in the right? And the more you are in the right, the more natural that everyone else should be bullied into thinking likewise.”

In Politics vs. Literature, he analyzes Part IV of Gulliver's Travels, stating that, “This illustrates very well the totalitarian tendency which is explicit in the anarchist or pacifist vision of society,” … “In other words, we know everything already, so why should dissident opinions be tolerated?"
And in the Introduction to Animal Farm Orwell writes, "At any given moment there is an orthodoxy, a body of ideas of which it is assumed that all right-thinking people will accept without question.”

-Orwell was especially down on what he called “flabby” pacifists, those whose conscience is stirred to action only when it has political purpose, just like we’ve seen here. In a 1944 letter he writes, “You are wrong also in thinking that I dislike wholehearted pacifism, though I do think it mistaken. What I object to is the circumspect kind of pacifism, which denounces one kind of violence while endorsing or avoiding mention of another. Your own failure to make a clear statement about the Russo-German war is the kind of thing I mean. I can respect anyone who is willing to face unpopularity, however much I disagree with him.”

In Second Thoughts on James Burhham, he says that the left is defeatist and in regards to World War II, just as today, “There was also the disaffection of large numbers of the intellectuals which made it difficult for them not to side with any country hostile to Britain.”

In Rudyard Kipling he writes, “All left-wing parties in the highly industrialized countries are at bottom a sham.”

Noam Chomsky vs. George Orwell

I've only read one of Noam Chomsky's essays, "Notes on Anarchism," and here's some of what I noticed.

For starters, Chomsky glorifies the French Revolution but as a typical pseudo- socialist, ignores all the "innocents" that were executed in the name of freedom. For anyone who uses mouthwash, you can now always remember that Lavoris is named after famous French chemist Antoine Lavoisier http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/biography/Lavoisier.html who was beheaded during the revolution for the "crime" of being an aristocrat, betrayed by a jealous scientific wannabe turned “liberator.”

Chomsky also glorifies the Spanish Civil War. George Orwell fought in this war and wrote about his experience in "Homage to Catolonia." What happened was that the rather then "unifying" under the banner of socialism, the anarchists, socialists and communists started fighting each other - a civil war within a civil war. This was the beginnings of what lead Orwell, a democratic socialist, to write a numbers of essays warning of the threat of leftist politics to liberty.

Also, another thing Orwell warns about is the wordiness of leftist writings, and how truth is propagandized and distorted for political gain by what on the surface to the unperceptive appears to be "intellectually" inspired literature. It would be fascinating if Orwell were alive today and see what he would say of Chomsky, since Chomsky's verbosity is the very antithesis of Orwell's call for clarity in political writing.

... Presidential aspirant Hillary Clinton used Rev. Al Sharpton's Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration to, as Professor Shelby Steele explains, "whistle for the black vote by pandering to the black sense of grievance."

... Sen. Clinton was simply employing the Democrats' political rope-a-dope for blacks. As Professor Steele asks in his Wall Street Journal editorial, "Hillary's Plantation": "Must blacks have their slave past rubbed in their face simply for Hillary Clinton to make a little hay against modern-day Republicans?" Steele also asks, "Does she really see us as she projects us -- as a people so backward that our support can be won with a simple plantation reference, and the implication that Republicans are racist?"

... Sen. John Kerry said, in reference to so many more blacks in prison than college, "That's unacceptable, but it's not their fault." Aside from Kerry being factually wrong about more blacks being in prison than in college, his vision differs little from one that holds blacks as a rudderless, victimized people who cannot control their destiny and whose best hope depends upon the benevolence of white people.

... The subtitle to Professor Steele's article is "Hillary Clinton reveals her fear of Condi Rice." He explains that Democrat liberalism has survived decades past the credibility of its ideas because it captured black resentment as an exclusive source of its power. That power will be gone the very day that a significant number of blacks cease to be a people of grievance. This is potentially a Republican advantage. The Democrats and the liberal establishment know that, which is why they vilify high-profile blacks who aren't filled with resentment and grievance.

Below is a list of things that President George W. Bush's administration has done to promote black progress. Things that an average black voter will like. Every time I rattle off this list to a Kerry supporter - like an uncle of mine this past weekend - they duck and dodge how Sen. John Kerry would be better. I understand why folks voted for President Clinton - I did it twice - but can't fathom why Sen. Kerry is worthy.

I had the good fortune, to participate in my second rally in support of Free Speech in front of the Danish Embassy, in less than a week.

This one, organized by writer Christopher Hitchens, was all pro-freedom, with none of the hate-filled rhetoric that spewed forth from the mouth of New Black Panther Party leader Malik Zulu Shabazz, at last week’s Anti-Free Speech Rally.

Those who arrived early today (the event was from noon-1) were treated with the offer of a free Danish pasty. Many of us who received one, choose to hoist these aloft, along with the signs and flags, as we chanted and cheered our support for the Danes.

One of the signs was made of Legos and read, “Free Speech.” It’s owner was enthusiastically cheered along as he brought it up the hill into our sight.

The police presence was minimal, mainly to help the various delivery and work trucks navigate through our crowd. The officer nearest me was smiling a lot, which was in stark contrast to the grim expressions the police had last week.

There were lots of media around, conducting interviews and taking pictures as we chanted “We LOVE the Danes,” and other slogans.

When Hitchens arrived, there was already a considerable group gathered. He was modest about his presence, quietly speaking to everyone near him, letting the group honor Denmark in a free and spontaneous manner.

The only time he addressed us as a group was at the very end, when he stood upon one of the white rocks in front of the embassy, speaking briefly about the importance of defending Free Speech and thanking us for showing our respect and support. He mentioned that maybe there needs to be peaceful assemblies in front of other embassies as well.

With that, he told us he had promised the Danish embassy that we’d depart at 1pm … And since it was that time, we, in groups, and as individuals, slowly began the trek down the street.

I see you mentioned Big Brother. With regard to your points:

See, that's the problem. Terrorists are trying to destroy western civilization. Not even counting all the suicide bombings, the cartoon riots alone show their fanaticism. Democrats like myself, let alone conservatives, see this as a crisis far greater then World War II. This is where the nation's energy needs to be focused. Take care of this first, then get back to our political squabbles.

From my point of view, we need to do everything possible to prevent another 9/11. As a resident of Baltimore, we have dozens of container ships come into the harbor every day, then leave by truck or rail to spread throughout the nation. Even one dirty bomb would be devastating.

Since then, I've revised several sections in response to reader requests for clarifications, and have added additional deceits which have been pointed out by readers or journalists. As a result, the number of listed deceits has been raised from 56 to 59. As of October 2, 2004, there have been 1,036,219 page views of the full report.

Thanks to the readers who have written to point out additional deceits or to point out items which need clarification. Also thanks to the readers who have written in defense of Moore. Many such readers have been rational and civil. Moore's reasonable defenders have made two main points:

First, notwithstanding the specific falsehoods, isn't the film as a whole filled with many important truths?

Not really. We can divide the film into three major parts. The first part (Bush, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan) is so permeated with lies that most of the scenes amount to lies. The second, shortest part involves domestic issues and the USA PATRIOT Act. So far, I've identified only one clear falsehood in this segment (Rep. Porter Goss's toll-free number). So this part, at least arguably, presents useful information. The third part, on Iraq, has several outright falsehoods--such as the Saddam regime's murder of Americans, and the regime's connection with al Qaeda. Other scenes in the third part--such as Iraqi casualties, interviews with American soldiers, and the material on bereaved mother Lila Lipscomb--are not blatant lies; but the information presented is so extremely one-sided (the only Iraqi casualties are innocents, nobody in Iraq is grateful for liberation, all the American soldiers are disillusioned, except for the sadists) that the overall picture of the Iraq War is false.

Second, say the Moore supporters, what about the Bush lies?

Well there are lies from the Bush administration which should concern everyone. For example, the Bush administration suppressed data from its own Department of Health and Human Services which showed that the cost of the new Prescription Drug Benefit would be much larger than the administration claimed. This lie was critical to passage of the Bush drug benefit bill. Similarly, Bush's characterization of his immigration proposal as not granting "amnesty" to illegal aliens is quite misleading; although the Bush proposal does not formally grant amnesty, the net result is the same as widespread amnesty. As one immigration reform group put it, "Any program that allows millions of illegal aliens to receive legal status in this country is an amnesty." Readers who want a scathing, and factually reliable, critique of the Bush administration might enjoy James Bovard's new book The Bush Betrayal (Palgrave MacMillan, 2004). (Free excerpt here.) Another good choice is All the President's Spin: George W. Bush, the Media, and the Truth, by Ben Fritz, Bryan Keefer, and Brendan Nyhan (Touchstone, 2004).

But two wrongs don't make a right, and the right response to Presidential lies is not more lies from his political opponents. Moreover, regarding the issues presented in Fahrenheit 9/11, the evidence of Bush lies is extremely thin. Moore shows Bush claiming that a particular day at the ranch in Crawford, Texas, was a working vacation, but Bush appears to be dissembling. Later, after Osama bin Laden was driven into hiding but was not captured, Bush unconvincingly claims not to spend much time thinking about bin Laden. Within Fahrenheit 9/11, most of the rest of alleged Bush administration lies actually involve Moore's fabrications to create the appearance of a lie--such as when Moore chops a Condoleezza Rice quote to make her say something when she actually said the opposite.

The one significant Bush administration lie exposed in the film involves the so-called USA PATRIOT Act; as Fahrenheit accurately claims, at least some of the material in the USA PATRIOT Act had nothing to do with 9/11, and instead involved long-sought items on the FBI agenda which had previously been unable to pass Congress, but which were enacted by Congress under Bush administration assurances that they were essential to fighting terrorism.

If you look up the noun "deceit" in the dictionary, you will find that the definitions point you to the verb "deceive." According to Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary, the main (non-archaic or obsolete) definition of "deceive" is "to cause to accept as true or valid what is false or invalid." Although the evidence in this report demonstrates dozens of plain deceits by Moore, there are some "deceits" in this report regarding which reasonable people may disagree. So if you find me unpersuasive on, for example, three alleged deceits, consider this article to have identified "Fifty-six Deceits" rather than fifty-nine. Whether or not you agree with me on every single item, I think you will agree that the evidence is undeniable that Fahrenheit 9/11 is filled with deceit.

Quite obviously, there are many patriotic Americans who oppose George Bush and who think the Iraq War was a mistake. But Moore's deceitful movie offers nothing constructive to help people form their opinions. To use lies and frauds to manipulate people is contrary to the very essence of democracy, which requires people to make rational decisions based on truthful information. It's wrong when a President lies. It's wrong when a talk radio host lies. And it's wrong when a film-maker lies."

Malik Zulu Shabazz, in the middle of one of his tirades. Claiming that he was the son of slaves and that, “"I built America.” He spent about two hours blaming terrorism on the Danes, America (or as he would often say, the United Snakes), the French, Jews, whites, etc. (Secret Service agents visible in background since the Danish Embassy is across the street form Hillary Clinton's DC mansion). He hardly spoke about the cartoons.

He threatened us, "It's a good thing the police are here, or else."

He also said we need to be like him and submit to Allah, and that Islam intends to rule the world.
(Wouldn’t that make Shabazz a slave? I thought he hated slavery, yet he wants to enslave the world.)

He said we had no right to criticize Islam, and that he and others were there to "teach" us about Islam (boy, aren't they)

We countered, in so many words, saying that he was full of shit (the police asked us not to incite the Muslims - I wonder why? - )

A lot of his remarks were plain silly, like how Islam was going to ruin Denmark by not buying it's products and calling us “cannibals.”

He criticized America for being a nation of guns. We agreed and told him we knew how to use them, too!

He demanded the "right" for Islam have nuclear bombs ... a scary thought for sure. He was reminded that Pakistan, as Islamic nation, already has them. Then he demanded 10,000 to equal America’s nuclear strength. We taunted him by saying that since he “built America,” he was responsible for building those bombs.

He called us "all Zionists," though there was only one Jewish person in our group.

He did actually say we deserved to have our heads cut off, to which we responded, "What about the religion of peace?"

There were roughly 24 anti-free speech demonstrators and 20 counter protesters. Though they brought along a generator powered PA, we frequently drowned them out with shear enthusiastic lungpower, plus 3 of our members had powered megaphones.

I was given a large American flag to hold, about 10' from the ground to top, plus I held a smaller Danish flag that I printed out on my home computer. We all had Danish flags of different sizes. Whenever Shabazz would bash the Danes, or say we had to submit to Allah, myself, along with others would hoist those flags high and drown him out by yelling "Freedom, freedom, freedom...")

We demanded that one of the Muslim women there be allowed to speak. Shabazz said when he was through, we'd hear from one. I yelled out, "But is she free?" The Muslim woman never materialized. I must have pissed of Shabazz a number of times; by the glares he sent my direction, like when I called him a liar. And I can yell really LOUD.

We'll, except for a lot of shouting everything was peaceful. We also sang songs like "I'd love to be an Oscar Meyer Wiener" and "Jingle Bells," to mock the intention of the protesters.

Shabazz did become enraged when we sang "Kumbaya" - "HOW DARE YOU SING KUMBAYA?" Our response was along the lines of, "Welcome to America, pal." (Shabazz grew up in America)

There was a strong police presence, with about 10 officers behind us (we were in FRONT of the barricades, directly in front of the protesters), plus other officers were down the street to our right, and others in the wooded area to our left. We made a point of thanking the police afterwards.

For the most part, the media was kept behind a barricade to our right. I guess there were maybe a dozen, including a reporter from the Washington Post, a cameraman from CNN, Michelle Malkin from Town Hall and a reporter from a Danish newspaper.

After two hours, they left. The police took down all the barricades. We gathered our stuff, and everyone headed back home.

The poor turnout on behalf of the Muslim extremists might indicate that moderate Muslims in our society want nothing to do with these fanatics. There is a Muslim community near where I live and I see these people whenever I grocery shop. A few even work there. They look like ordinary decent folks and I'm sure the majority are.

Whether the extremists like it or not, Muslims here are becoming Americanized. The extremists forget that the immigrants came here to get away from the oppression in the Middle East. I'm not saying that America doesn't have its problems, but the opportunities here are very great. I see Middle Eastern owned businesses all the time. They came here to fulfill their dreams, not destroy them.
